Verification of Competency (VOC)

A Verification of Competency (VOC) checks whether an operator can demonstrate the knowledge and practical skills needed to use particular equipment safely in the workplace.

Previous training and experience provide a foundation, but equipment, tasks and workplace conditions can change. A VOC helps businesses assess current operator ability, identify gaps and document the findings.

ReadyWork Australia provides onsite VOC assessments using your workplace equipment, with the assessment scope agreed before the booking.

 A VOC may be useful when:

• an operator is new to your site 
• an operator has not used the equipment for some time 
• a business wants to confirm an operator’s current skill level 
• equipment, site layout, procedures, or workplace risks have changed 
• unsafe habits or inconsistent operation have been observed 
• a client, principal contractor, or site requires evidence of current competency 
• training records need to be updated or strengthened 

A VOC assesses existing skills. Refresher training helps operators revisit and improve those skills. If someone has limited experience, has developed unsafe habits or needs help using unfamiliar equipment, training may be more appropriate before assessment.

1. Confirm the requirements

We discuss the equipment, tasks, operator experience and any site or client requirements. Relevant licences and previous training records are reviewed where applicable.

2. Check knowledge and practical skills

The assessment includes questions and practical observation relevant to the equipment and tasks. This may cover pre-start checks, hazard awareness, operating controls, load handling, pedestrian safety, parking and shutdown.

3. Discuss the outcome

If we find any areas requiring further development, we explain them and answer any questions, and outline the next steps to support your ongoing learning and development. 

Before the VOC, participants must provide their Statement of Attainment for the relevant unit of competency covering the equipment being assessed, along with a current High Risk Work Licence where required. 

ReadyWork Australia provides onsite VOC assessments for a wide range of equipment types.  

Examples include:

• Forklifts and reach trucks: Toyota 8-Series, Crown SC Series, Crown RR/RD 5700 and Raymond 7000 Series reach trucks.
• Order pickers: Crown SP 3500/4000 Series, Toyota 5000 Series and Raymond 5000 Series.
• Walkie stackers: Crown ES 4000, Crown ST/SX 3200 Series and Toyota Staxio pedestrian stackers.
• Electric pallet jacks: Crown WP 3200 Series, Toyota 8210, Toyota Levio LWE Series and Raymond 8250 walkie pallet jacks.
• Scissor lifts: Genie GS Series and JLG ES Series.
• Vertical lifts and work assist vehicles: Genie GR Runabout Series and Crown WAV 60 Work Assist Vehicles.
• Boom lifts: Genie Z-Series articulated booms and JLG articulated and telescopic boom lifts.

Each participant receives a Statement of Attendance confirming their participation. Your business receives a separate VOC assessment record detailing the operator, equipment, assessment date, scope and outcome, along with any identified skill gaps and recommended follow-up.

VOC assessments are non-accredited and do not provide a nationally recognised Statement of Attainment. They do not replace a required High Risk Work Licence, training, site induction, supervision or ongoing risk management.
